Different Realities, Part 4

Image
Three time previously, I have written about how different media outlets cover an event. In May, 2018 , it was coverage of protests in Gaza after the US opened its new embassy in Jerusalem. In January, 2019 , the topic was the end of the US government shutdown. In April, 2020 , the divergence was over the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, there are several things going on, including, most prominently a major conviction in a big tax fraud case and a major Senate election. But the topic seems especially relevant now, as less than a week ago there was a brouhaha on twitter over "The Hunter Biden files," in which is was alleged that twitter had suppressed a major news story. So, without further introduction, let's see who is suppressing what, this time. Here are the "above the fold" pages, currently on the various sites. Taking the same sources as in the April 2020 post. Some of these aren't like the others. CNN:  The Senate run-off is most prominent, followed b...

Twice before, I have written about how different media outlets cover an event. In May, 2018 , it was coverage of protests in Gaza after the US opened its new embassy in Jerusalem. In January, 2019 , the topic was the end of the US government shutdown. Today, we are in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are the "above the fold" pages, currently on the various sites. One of these isn't like the others. CNN:  Mostly COVID-19: A main report on testing, some statistics, a couple of features, the situation in Texas, and op-ends. THE NEW YORK TIMES: All COVID-19, starting with statistics and states. THE WASHINGTON POST: COVID-19 feature leads, followed by states. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL COVID-19: Texas and testing. And, of course the stock market. NEW YORK POST: Local tragic impact of COVID-19. And sports. FOX NEWS: Biden scandal! Kim Jon Un! Did we say, "Biden Scandal"? BIDEN SCANDAL!!!

Different Realities, Part 2

Last May, I wrote about how different media outlets covered an event. Here's the coverage of the temporary end to the US Government shutdown. CNN:  Short and simple: "Trump caves on the shutdown." THE NEW YORK TIMES: "Trump Agrees to End Shutdown in Surprise Retreat." No doubt as to who is to blame, and how it turned out politically. THE WASHINGTON POST: Lead with the Senate, but then add articles showing public reaction as well as the FBI pushing back. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Trump leads!!! FOX NEWS: Trump leads!!! And, like CNN, Fox also knows I recently googled lodging in Chicago, though they haven't quite figured out that the trip already happened.

Earlier this week, the United States opened its new embassy in Jerusalem. That same day, there were massive protests in Gaza, and dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces. There are many ways to report the events of the day. I had expected, however, that at least some  of the facts were important enough to be reported in any major news source. I was wrong. It has been said that we are in "post-truth" times. Maybe that's true. The following website from pages were all pulled within a span of a few minutes of each other on Monday evening. Which truth is your truth? In a multiple choice test, I'm thinking my answer may be, "none of the below." THE NEW YORK TIMES "Death in Gaza, a New Embassy in Jerusalem and No Sign of Peace." A nearly two minute video showing the juxtaposition, and then one analysis of the events in Gaza, one of the event in Jerusalem, and also an analysis of the controversial speaker. Also, an editorial in add...

Obama and the Queen of Soul in Detroit

I'm not much for attending major political events, or going to see big-name politicians. When I was at grad school at USC in 1984, I saw two campaign appearances. At the first one, Walter Mondale had to answer some particularly obnoxious hecklers by bellowing, "You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. This is the school that produced Donald Segretti! " No, they didn't throw tomatoes, as Susan Estrich has recalled, or if they did, their aim was bad enough so I didn't notice. Then again, they probably didn't know who Segretti was, anyway. It was a great put-down, but the jecklers just kept on shouting, "Reagan Country!" Later that same fall, I saw a campaign appearance for the Republicans. Vice President Bush spoke. The USC mascot, Traveler , paraded around with its rider --presumably Richard Saukko -- in full regalia. The introduction was by Moses himself, Charlton Heston . It was all very... regal and distant. Politicians -- good polit...
