COVID-19 Compilation: Part 1 - March 14-21, 2020

On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.

This blog post compiles the period of March 14th through March 21st. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

MARCH 15:
yesterday's COVID-19 stats summary: pretty bad day overall. 684 deaths worldwide, changing the overall total by 12%. The 684 deaths is easily the most so far for one day, surpassing the previous record of 448 set on Friday. The 12% change in the grand total was the most for a single day since deaths started happening outside of China.

There were 12,781 new cases recorded yesterday, also easily the most to date.

In the US, there were 737 new cases, the most on a single day to date, and let's keep in mind we still don't have adequate testing here. The overall total is now 3782 cases and 69 deaths.

If there's any good news, it's that the rate of increase in new cases may be slowing: In Italy by just 3% and in the US by 6%. Perhaps a signal that the various shutdowns of the past several days are beginning to have an impact.

MARCH 16:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary: pretty bad day overall, with a few small rays of light.
The good news first:
In Italy, the number of new cases actually went down a bit, from 3590 to 3233. The number of deaths in Italy also went down, from 368 to 349. Italy's health care system is in severe crisis, it's not like they have capacity for another 3,000+ cases. Still, the daily number is still the lowest in 3 days, perhaps a sign that they might be turning a small corner.

Worldwide, there were 641 deaths, a slight decline from 686 on Sunday.

In the US, there were 1024 new cases, shattering the prior record of 737 set on Sunday. This may be partly due to more testing capability finally starting to become available. The US now has 4706 total cases. The 18 deaths on Monday in the US were easily more than the prior high of 11.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when POTUS said we had 15 total cases, soon to be 5 or 0? Tomorrow the US will pass 5000 total cases and 100 total deaths, and we're still tracking 10 days behind Italy in terms of total cases. The mortality rate in the US is only about 1/4 of the Italian rate thus far, but we also have fewer hospital beds per capita.

And, oh by the way, the market crashed even bigger than last week's crashes.

MARCH 17:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary: it's getting uglier by the day.
Nearly 16,000 new cases worldwide, and more than 800 deaths, both records.

In the US, there were more than 1800 new cases today; that's more than the past two days combined. That makes 9 days in a row with a record amount of new cases in the US. The 29 deaths in the US is also the worst yet for a single day. The US is now over 100 total deaths and 6500 total cases.

Elsewhere: 191 deaths were recorded in Spain, after "just" 342 before today. And the Faeroe Islands, population 49,000, recorded 29 new cases for 47 overall.

Italy, at least, continues to be flat in terms of new cases and deaths, that's good insofar as Italy can't take any further increases. Still, Bergamo (Lombardy region) is now out of intensive care beds.

More places in the US shut down. At the University of Michigan, students on campus received a simple message: "you need to return to your permanent residence."

MARCH 18:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary: more than 20,000 new cases worldwide, and nearly 1,000 deaths, both records.

More than 4200 new cases in Italy, and 475 more deaths there. In Bergamo (Lombardy region), 20% of family doctors are now infected. And, as noted yesterday, there are no available intensive care beds. Tomorrow, Italy will displace China as the country with the most deaths due to COVID-19.

The US continues on a Fibonacci pattern: Today's numbers of new cases and deaths were slightly more than the last two days combined: more than 2800 new cases and 45 deaths. Tomorrow, the US will pass the 10,000 mark for total cases.

The new US epicenter is New York. There were more than 1300 new cases in New York today; no other state has that many so far overall. The situation in New York has been significantly worsened by irresponsible behaviors, such as in the Hasidic community of Brooklyn that has openly flouted rules against large gatherings and is now suffering a massive outbreak, with "at least 100" showing positive test results this morning.

MARCH 19:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary: There were no new cases in Wuhan! The place where it all started, down to zero!

Deaths in Italy were down from yesterday's record, but the 427 new deaths brought Italy's total to 3405, displacing China as the country with the most deaths to date.

For the 3rd consecutive day, the US has continued the Fibonacci pattern on new cases, with more than 4500 around the country. If this continues tomorrow, then the US will overtake Italy for the most new cases on a daily basis.

More than half of the new US cases were in New York. Here in Michigan, the number of total cases more than quadrupled in a single day, from 80 to 336.

Worldwide, there were more than 25,000 new cases today, and more than 1,000 deaths; the total death toll cleared 10,000.

MARCH 20:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary: For one day, at least, the US got off the Fibonacci pattern. Yes, there were more than 5600 new cases, easily a new record, but Fibonacci would have had the country over 7000, so... either there is progress being made, or tomorrow will be truly awful. Deaths in the US were down from 57 to 55, but we shouldn't expect that to be a trend.

New York continues to be the US epicenter, with more than half of all of the new cases. Hospitals in New York are already reaching capacity and running low on critical resources such as masks and ventilators, and many other areas of the country aren't far behind.

Worldwide, 30,000 new cases and more than 1300 deaths. Italy continues to lead with nearly 6,000 new case and 627 deaths. In Bergamo: "'There are significant numbers of people who have died but whose death hasn't been attributed to the coronavirus because they died at home or in a nursing home and so they weren't swabbed,' said the mayor." The official death toll in Italy of 4032 is awful, but the real death toll is likely significantly greater.

And, for those with long enough memories: A full month after the last passengers disembarked from the Diamond Princess, a Canadian former passenger died from complications of COVID-19.

MARCH 21:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
San Marino. One of the world's oldest republics, surrounded entirely by northeast Italy. At just 24 square miles and 34,000 people, it's substantially smaller than the town in which I live. According to flu rates for the surrounding area in Italy, San Marino should get between 2 and 16 fatalities annually from the flu, with a typical fly season killing around 9 people.

6 Sammarinese died from COVID-19 today, bringing the total there to 20. That makes San Marino the first country in the world to have more documented deaths from COVID-19 than even the worst case expectations from the seasonal flu. It won't be the last.

As for Italy, a record 793 died there today, with more than 6,500 new cases. Worldwide, more than 1600 died, bringing the overall total to more than 13,000.

But, at least, there were a few notable improvements:
  • In Iran, the documented new cases slipped under 1000 for the first time since March 11.
  • In Germany, the documented new cases fell from more than 4500 on Friday, to just over 2500 on Saturday.
  • And in the US, the number of documented new cases fell slightly, to 4820. The number of deaths also fell slightly. I'm going off of worldometers, which resets at GMT +0, meaning it's now 2 hours in to Sunday. There are already 1357 new cases reported in New York for Sunday, and 22 new deaths nationwide.
