COVID-19 Compilation: Part 11 - May 24-30, 2020

On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.

This blog post compiles the period of May 24th through May 30th. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

MAY 24:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 96,505 new COVID-19 cases today, and 2,826 deaths. In the US, there were 19,608 new cases and 617 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 5.49 million cases and 346,424 deaths, with 1.69 million cases and 99,300 deaths in the US.

The 2,826 deaths worldwide is the lowest number since March 25th. The US total of 617 is the least since Match 29th.

The United States did not lead the world in COVID-19 deaths today, that grim honor went to Brazil. Per worldometers tabulations, the US will pass the 100,000 death mark sometime in the next 2 days.

India had a new record for cases for the 4th consecutive day, with 7,113. Mexico also had a new record, with 3,329.

Of notable interest locally: Michigan reported 314 new cases and 5 deaths today. Excluding one day in early May when technical difficulties caused an incomplete report, that's the lowest number of new cases in Michigan since March 23rd. The 5 deaths is the lowest number since March 22nd (the first death in Michigan from COVID-19 was on March 19th).

Yesterday I looked at week over week cases change worldwide. Today, the same for the US. The weeks compared will be the week ending yesterday, May 23rd, against the week of May 16th.

I'm restricting to states that recorded at least 500 new cases in at least one of the two weeks. That's 40 states plus the District of Columbia. 9 states reported fewer than 500 new cases each week: Hawaii, Montana, Vermont, Alaska, Wyoming, West Virginia, Idaho, Maine, and Oregon. Oregon is new to the list of states under 500 cases for consecutive weeks; North Dakota had been under 500 for consecutive weeks but exceeded that number last week.

Nationwide, new cases were down 0.9% the week ending May 23rd.

The biggest declines in new cases:
StateCases, Week of 5/16Cases, Week of 5/23Percent Change

MAY 25:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 90,128 new COVID-19 cases today, and 3,096 deaths. In the US, there were 19,790 new cases and 505 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 5.58 million cases and 347,613 deaths, with 1.71 million cases and 99,805 deaths in the US.

In Spain, as "the result of the validation of the same data by the autonomous communities and the transition to a new surveillance strategy," today's report actually shows a decrease of 372 total cases and 1,916 deaths. Including the decrease from Spain, the total death count worldwide is up by 1,179 today.

The US had less than 20,000 new cases on consecutive days for the first time since March 27th and 28th. The death toll of 1122 over the past two days is the lowest since March 26th and 27th. Per the worldometers counts, the US will exceed total 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 within the next few hours.

Standard disclaimers about counts on Sundays and holidays in the US apply.

Worldwide, Chile and Bangladesh had single-day records for new cases; Chile with 4,895 cases and Bangladesh with 1,975.

In the US, Michigan continues to reduce its case count: The 202 cases reported today were the lowest (not including the partial report from May 4th due to technical difficulties) since March 18th.

On the other hand, Virginia shattered its previous record high, set just 4 days ago, by more than 250. There were 1,483 new cases in Virginia today, behind only California and Illinois nationally.

Virginia had 1,615 cases, topping the record of 1483 set just yesterday.

Alabama already had one of the fastest growing case loads last week, up to an average of 349 from 287 the week before. Today, Alabama had 664 new cases, 6th highest in the country.

France adjusted its total number of cases downward today, due to how nursing home cases are tabulated. It's the 2nd significant downward adjustment in Western Europe in as many days; yesterday Spain also adjusted its reports.

this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 106,475 new COVID-19 cases today, and 5,283 deaths. In the US, there were 20,546 new cases and 1,535 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 5.78 million cases and 356,937 deaths, with 1.75 million cases and 102,107 deaths in the US.

Brazil let the world in new cases today, with 22,301. Barring a late adjustment, this will be the first time since March 21st that the United States has not led.

South America also leads the world, by continents, in new cases. Today, there were 35,891 cases in South America, 35% more than North America and more than twice the European number.

In several continents, a single county is responsible for most of the new cases today:
ContinentCountryPercentage of New Cases
North AmericaUSA78%

Another South American emerging hotspot is Peru. Unlike in Brazil, the government in Peru took the virus seriously from the start. Nonetheless, the virus is out of control.

Brazil had its highest total to date today, at 105 new cases per million people.

The highest per capita daily total in the US is 118 new cases per million people.

In the UK, the high was In Spain, 177.

Peru with 6,154 cases, was at 187 cases per million people today.

Worldwide, there were 116,304 new COVID-19 cases today, and 5,059 deaths. In the US, there were 22,658 new cases and 1,223 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 5.90 million cases and 361,549 deaths, with 1.77 million cases and 103,330 deaths in the US.

Today marked the 64th consecutive day of at least 60,000 new cases 60,000 worldwide. Before today, the record for the most cases in a single day was 107,521, set last Friday. Needless to say, 116,304 exceeds that mark by a wide margin.

Brazil had the most cases in the world again today, with a national record of 24,151.

MAY 29:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 125,511 new COVID-19 cases today, and 4,872 deaths. In the US, there were 25,069 new cases and 1,212 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.03 million cases and 366,421 deaths, with 1.79 million cases and 104,542 deaths in the US.

That we have another new worldwide record for new cases on a Friday is not really a surprise. To see an exponential curve re-starting, on the other hand, that's a surprise. To a significant extent, that's because South America is out of control. Brazil had 29,526 new cases today, that's not only the most for today, but it's the most for any country in the world in more than 3 weeks. Brazil also now has had more people die from COVID-19 than Spain.

Single-day highs were recorded in India (8,105), Peru (6,506), Bangladesh (2,523), Qatar (1,993), South Africa (1,837), Colombia (1,322), Egypt (1,289) and the Philippines (1,046).

In the US, COVID-19 is not the top story in the news. But it's not like the virus went away: California (2,947), North Carolina (1,129), Wisconsin (733) and Arizona (702) all set records for new cases. In California, the new cases were again dominated by the Southern portion of the state, where 6 counties accounted for 85% of the new cases.

There may still be a perception that most cases are in an older population. While that is true for deaths, the cases are distributed far more evenly.
StatePercentage of New Cases in People Under Age 50
Wisconsin61%
North Carolina59%
California57%
Arizona63% under age 55

The United States counts were dominated by Los Angeles County. With 2,112 cases, the county accounted for 2/3 of the cases in California, and had more cases than any other state, and all but 10 countries worldwide. According to a news report, "Officials said the large number was due in part to a backlog of test results being processed and also a new lab beginning to report results."
