COVID-19 Compilation: Part 44 - January 25-30, 2021

On March 14th, 2020, I began posting COVID-19 updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have used data from worldometer as a primary source for daily and cumulative data, with frequent supplementation from various national and local sites.

Notables this week:

  • new cases continued to fall sharply in both the USA and worldwide
  • deaths remained about the same both in the USA and worldwide

This blog post compiles the period of January 25th through 30th, 2021. see https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ for more

JANUARY 25

100,000.

Today's counts
Location Total Cases Cases Today Total Deaths Deaths Today
World 100.28 million 454,381 2.150 million 9,835
USA 25.86 million 152,054431,407 1,912

Per worldometer tallies, the world passed the 100 million case mark today.

In the United States, Arizona became the 6th state to surpass 10% of its total population testing positive. It becomes fair to ask, again, when does herd immunity start kicking in? If actual cases are many times that of the reported cases, are we getting there?

Consider North Dakota; at 12.7% of the total population North Dakota has the highest positive rate for the United States, and higher than any country in the world. But North Dakota reported just 57 new cases today, the fewest there since July 14th. Since November 18th, the 7-day rolling average for cases in North Dakota has fallen by more than 90%.

JANUARY 26

Today's counts

World 100.82 million 537,764 2.166 million 16,062
USA 26.01 million 151,512435,608 4,201

Three states set new records for COVID-19 death reports today. In Hawaii, the state Health Department reported 60 deaths that had occurred between August and December.

World 101.41 million 603,027 2.183 million 17,208
USA 26.18 million 159,990439,861 4,256

In the USA, the 7-day rolling average for new cases is now down 35% from the high set just 16 days ago. Hospitalizations are down 19% over the past 3 weeks.

But the 7-day rolling average for deaths in the USA hit a new high yesterday.

JANUARY 28

World 102.02 million 607,583 2.200 million 16,616
USA 26.34 million 165,971443,8073,947

The 7-day rolling average for US cases are at the lowest level now since November 17th, 2020.

The The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) announced more than 200 COVID-19 deaths today, blaming a "Vital Statistics system upgrade issue" for failing to report deaths recorded "over the last several weeks."

JANUARY 30

Today's counts
Location Total Cases Cases Today Total Deaths Deaths Today
World 103.11 million 501,264 2.228 million 12,683
USA 26.66 million 140,867 450,384 2,892
This week's counts

World 3.79 million -9.8% 97,986 -0.6%
USA 1.09 million -13.6% 22,742 +2.1%

Cases fell sharply again this week, both in the USA and worldwide. But cases did not fall as sharply as they did last week.

Deaths fell worldwide for the first time since Christmas week, and for the first time during a non-holiday week since October. In the USA, deaths were up, though most of the increase was due to reporting anomalies.

The 7-day average for cases has gone down in all but 7 states since the start of the year, in many cases by large margins. However, nearly 30 states have seen an increase in COVID-19 deaths. The attached table shows the 7-day case and death rates, by state, as of January 1st and as of January 29th.
