COVID-19 Compilation: Part 12 - May 31 - June 6, 2020

On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.

This blog post compiles the period of May 31st through June 6th. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

MAY 31:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 108,767 new COVID-19 cases today, and 3,191 deaths. In the US, there were 20,350 new cases and 638 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.26 million cases and 373,697 deaths, with 1.84 million cases and 106,195 deaths in the US.

Today marks the end of the 4th calendar month of COVID-19 in the US. Starting today and over the next several days, I'll look back at the data over time. Today, looking back at February.

The international spread of COVID-19 started in earnest in February. On February 2nd, the first death outside of China was recorded, in the Philippines. On February 15th, the first European death was recorded. And on February 28th, the USA recorded its first death from COVID-19 (it has since been learned that the USA had COVID-19 deaths going back to at least February 6th).

Much of the focus in the USA was on The Diamond Princess cruise ship. Classified as an "international conveyance," The Diamond Princess turned in to a real-life petri dish during February, and at the end of the month had the 4th most cases and 5th most deaths in the world.

Another major outbreak in February was in South Korea, largely within the religious group Shincheonji Church of Jesus. In Italy, a soccer match in Milan on February 19th likely acted as a super-spreader event; the first case was recorded in Bergamo, the home city of the visiting Atalanta team, two days later. The head of pulmonology at a Bergamo hospital later referred to the match as "a biological bomb."

When the month started, 11,791 out of 11,950 cases worldwide, and all 259 deaths, had been in China. During the first half of February, there were more than 2,000 new cases every day, mostly in China. New cases fell under 1,000 per day on the 18th, falling to as low as 554 on the 23rd. On February 27th, cases were over 1,000 a day again, as South Korea had more cases than China. China would not lead the world in new cases again.

As of the end of February, these were the top 10 countries for total cases.

JUNE 1:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 102,898 new COVID-19 cases today, and 3,014 deaths. In the US, there were 22,153 new cases and 730 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.36 million cases and 377,152 deaths, with 1.86 million cases and 106,925 deaths in the US.

Yesterday, to mark the end of the 4th calendar month of COVID-19 in the US, I started looking back at the virus stats month by month. In installment two, a look back at March.

As of the start of March, it might have been fair to think of the virus as the "Wuhan virus." Sure, by the end of February South Korea had more daily cases than China and there were substantial outbreaks in Italy, on a cruise ship, and in Iran, but as the month started 92% of all cases and 96% of all deaths had been in China.

That would all change radically in March.

As the month started, South Korea was the world's biggest hotspot, but through extreme contract tracing the country was able to bring the virus under control by the middle of the month. Italy was not so fortunate. On March 4th, Italy passed South Korea for most daily cases, and hospitals in and around Bergamo were soon overwhelmed. On March 7th, Italy had 1,247 cases, becoming the first country other than China to have more than 1,000 in a single day. Despite extreme lockdown measures in Italy to try to control the virus, the increase of Italian cases continued exponentially until finally topping out at 6,557 on the 21st.

Spain, starting a week after Italy, had an outbreak even worse than in Italy, eventually topping out at 8,271 cases on March 26th.

But it was in the USA where things changed the most. As March started, there were 68 cases in the USA, with modest spread: there were 7 new cases on the 1st. We would learn later that there were likely many more cases, undiagnosed. Lack of access to working test kits impacted the US ability to diagnose cases of the virus. By the middle of the month, many states began to impose lockdown measures.

Nonetheless, the rate of new cases in the USA grew at an exponential rate throughout March. On the 17th, the US topped one thousand new cases for the first time. By the 22nd, the US topped Italy for new cases on a single day, a "title" the country would not relinquish on any day for more than 2 months. The daily totals continued to rise significantly every day for the remainder of the month, and on the 31st the USA had a world record 25,176 cases in a single day.

The deaths inevitably follows: By the 31st the USA topped 1,000 daily deaths as will, with 1,085.

Overall, total cases increased worldwide by 797% in March, and deaths increased by 1,279%.

JUNE 2:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 110,879 new COVID-19 cases today, and 4,528 deaths. In the US, there were 21,882 new cases and 1,134 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.47 million cases and 381,718 deaths, with 1.88 million cases and 108,059 deaths in the US.

To mark the end of the 4th calendar month of COVID-19 in the US, I am looking back at the virus stats month by month. In installment three, a look back at April.

At of the start of April, the US was the dominant country for COVID-19. And the unquestioned epicenter of US cases was in New York, which had been hit hard by early super-spreader events and a sluggish initial response to the virus. As March ended, New York had 40% of all the cases in the United States, and 52% of the deaths. But the worst was yet to come in New York: in April there were 233,893 new cases in New York State and 21,103 deaths, and it's generally believed that both of those numbers are significant undercounts.

Overall the US recorded 901,670 new cases and 58,705 deaths in April. To put these numbers in perspective, the next 8 countries combined totaled 897,875 cases. On April 24th, the US recorded 38,958 new cases, which remains the most for any country on any single day. Three days earlier, the US recorded 2,683 deaths.

April also saw the start of significant spread beyond Western Europe, as outbreaks in Russia and Brazil intensified.

JUNE 3:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 121,280 new COVID-19 cases today, and 4,927 deaths. In the US, there were 20.578 new cases and 1,083 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.56 million cases and 386,786 deaths, with 1.90 million cases and 109,142 deaths in the US.

To mark the end of the 4th calendar month of COVID-19 in the US, I am looking back at the virus stats month by month. In installment four, a look back at May.

Throughout March and April, much of Western Europe and the United States had effectively shut down, in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19. with varying levels of success. Some of the largest dropoffs in daily average cases per day:
CountryPercentage Change in May
Italy-73%
Spain-70%
Germany-78%
France-82%

These countries were #2 through #5 in cases in March, and were all in the top 10 in April. None were in May's top 10.

Cases fell in the United States as well, by 20%.

In the epicenter of New York, cases fell by 71%. But, as the cases fell there, the US saw outbreaks spread to several new area.

Worldwide, cases were up by 18%, due largely to an explosion of cases ins several South American and Asian Countries:
CountryPercentage Change in May
Chile+509%
South Africa+509%
Kuwait+496%
Brazil+422%

On May 27th, Brazil became the first country in the world other than the United States to have the most cases worldwide since March 21st. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's "little flu" had become a raging pandemic.

JUNE 4:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 129,990 new COVID-19 cases today, and 5,499 deaths. In the US, there were 22,268 new cases and 1,031 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.69 million cases and 392,286 deaths, with 1.92 million cases and 110,173 deaths in the US.

The worldwide case number is a new record, and Brazil (31,890), India (9,899), South Africa (3,267), and Colombia (1,766) were among the countries with new records for cases. Death records were also set in Brazil (1,492) and Mexico (1,092). In the US, Florida set a new record with 1,419 new cases.

To mark the end of the 4th calendar month of COVID-19 in the US, I spent the past 4 updates looking back at the global virus stats month by month.

Today, I'll shift focus to the United States case counts in May. Specifically, on one simple metric: the percent rise of total cases in each state for the month (a 100% rise means the total number of cases doubled from April 30th until May 31st). The smaller the rise, the simplistic notion goes, the better the state is doing at bringing the pandemic under control. There are obvious flaws in this reasoning: it doesn't account for very localized outbreaks, nor differentiate as to case rates prior to May. So, take with the appropriate amount of disclaimers.

The case count for the US rose, overall, by 67.8%.

JUNE 5:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 130,529 new COVID-19 cases today, and 4,906 deaths. In the US, there were 25,393 new cases and 975 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.84 million cases and 397,446 deaths, with 1.97 million cases and 111,390 deaths in the US.

The worldwide case number is a new record.

In the US, California (3,600), Texas (2,080), and Arizona (1,579) were the three states with the most cases, all with new single-day records. North Carolina (1,220) and had a new single-day record.

Also in the US, Michigan started reporting probable COVID-19 cases and deaths, thus causing its totals to increase by 4,928 cases and 240 deaths. Partly as a result, Michigan no longer has the highest Case Fatality Rate in the country; that "honor" is passed to Connecticut.

To mark the end of the 4th calendar month of COVID-19 in the US, I spent the past several updates looking back at the global and US virus stats by month.

Today's final installment looks at the United States death counts in May. Specifically, on one simple metric: the percent rise of total deaths in each state for the month (a 100% rise means the total number of cases doubled from April 30th until May 31st). this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 126,715 new COVID-19 cases today, and 4,177 deaths. In the US, there were 22,836 new cases and 706 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 6.97 million cases and 401,623 deaths, with 1.99 million cases and 112,096 deaths in the US.

There were 837,464 new cases worldwide over the week ending today, that's an 11% jump from the prior week's record high. India had more than 10,000 cases in a single day for the first time today.

In the US, I noted yesterday that Michigan started reporting probably COVID-19 cases and deaths. Suffolk County New York also started reporting probable cases, based on positive tests for antibodies. Altogether, US case counts were adjusted upward by 16,264 case as a result.

So far, we have yet to see any definitive impact on case counts from the large protests happening throughout the United States since the May 25th murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Several warm weather states continued to have high totals, including a new record case count in North Carolina of 1,423.
