COVID-19 Compilation: Part 14 - June 14-20, 2020

On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.

This blog post compiles the period of June 14th through June 20th. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

JUNE 14:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 123,723 new COVID-19 cases today, and 3,258 deaths. In the US, there were 20,004 new cases and 331 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 7.98 million cases and 435,181 deaths, with 2.16 million cases and 117,858 deaths in the US.

The US death count today is the lowest since March 25th. Typical caveats apply to Sunday numbers.

Countries with new records include:
CountryNumber of Cases
Chile6,938
Pakistan6,825
South Africa4,302
Saudi Arabia4,233
Colombia2,193
Oman1,404
Panama1,359

In the US, Alabama and South Carolina had new daily records again, with 1,014 and 840 new cases, respectively.

Yesterday, I looked at the top 10 USA states for number of cases and cases per 1M population over the week of June 7-13. Today, a look at the states with the fewest cases over the same time period.
StateNumber of Cases
Montana47
Hawaii50
Vermont79
Wyoming111
Alaska118
West Virginia138
Maine233
North Dakota242
Idaho260
New Hampshire280

In terms of cases per 1M population, these are the top 10:
StateNumber of Cases per Million
Hawaii36
Montana44
West Virginia77
Vermont127
Idaho145
Alaska161
Maine173
Michigan185
Wyoming192
Colorado203

New York had the 6th most cases last week, with 5,999. North Dakota had the 8th fewest cases, with 242. But North Dakota had more cases per capita than New York: 318 per million, as compared to 309 per million.

JUNE 15:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 124,600 new COVID-19 cases today, and 3,415 deaths. In the US, there were 20,722 new cases and 425 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 8.11 million cases and 438,596 deaths, with 2.18 million cases and 118,283 deaths in the US.

Has the US turned the corner on the health results of COVID-19 cases?

The total number of new cases in the US hasn't changed very much over the past 3 weeks: from 152.3k to 157.2k to 153.7k. Deaths, though, have gone from 6.9k to 6.3k to 5.4k over those same 3 weeks. Measured as Incremental Case Fatality Rate (ICFR), a measure that I don't know actually exists beyond my page but which seems like a nice enough first derivative, it's a reduction of a full percentage point, from 4.5% to 3.5%.

Consider these states that are having new spikes in cases, but have IFCR rates the past two days under half a percent:

State
New Cases
Deaths
ICFR
Alabama
1,671
1
0.1%
South Carolina
1,423
3
0.2%
Florida
3,730
13
0.3%
Arizona
2,247
11
0.5%

For the most part these states were not heavily impacted early in the pandemic; those states mostly populate the bottom of this same list. Perhaps the states seeing the new case spikes are doing better keeping the virus away from especially vulnerable populations such as in nursing homes. Some are suggesting the spikes are due to increased testing. President Trump, just today, said: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually." But while testing has gone up in some states, others -- such as Alabama and Arizona in the chart above -- have gone down. The "positivity rate," though, has gone way up in these states:

State
Positivity Rate 5/31-6/1
Positivity Rate 6/14-6/15
Alabama
7.9%
17.8%
South Carolina
7.1%
9.6%
Florida
3.1%
6.2%
Arizona
6.1%
18.0%

Or, perhaps, deaths will catch up in these states.

JUNE 16:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 142,557 new COVID-19 cases today, and 6,592 deaths. In the US, there were 25,450 new cases and 849 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 8.25 million cases and 445,188 deaths, with 2.21 million cases and 119,132 deaths in the US.

The worldwide new case count set another new record, the 6th new record so far this month.

India recorded 2,006 deaths, the most for any country since May 7th. A partial explanation for India's numbers is in an article from India Express: "Why Mumbai is latest to revise Covid-19 death toll... the error in Mumbai’s data was a result of an internal assessment that, last week, revealed that a follow-up on 450 patients had been missing. It was then that it emerged that all of them had died, but were not included in the list of dead."

The logic is inescapable: if the patients are missing, they can't be counted as dead!

Brazil recorded 37,728 new cases, the 2nd highest total of any country on a single day so far during the pandemic, behind only the US total of 39,072 on April 24th.

Speaking of the US, can we just say it?

Some states appear to have given up trying to contain COVID-19.

In Texas today, there were 4,413 new cases. Anderson County, previously home to 102 cases, today reported 887. That's not a misprint. The new cases are almost entirely from inmates in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Similarly, 589 new cases were reported in Brazoria County. Even without those cases, which were previously diagnosed and only reported today, the remaining 2,937 cases in Texas would easily be a new record.

Texas also reached a new high of COVID-19 hospitalizations, at 2,518; that's up 31% in just the past 8 days; today is the 5th consecutive day with a new record. Texas Governor Greg Abbott commented, "there is no reason to be alarmed."

In Florida, there were 2,783 new cases, another record. There, officials are openly bickering along partisan lines. Nikki Fried, the Democratic Agriculture Commissioner, said that Governor Ron DeSantis had "lost control of Florida's COVID-19 response" by "recklessly reopening Florida despite the data screaming for caution." She went on: "To our citizens, I implore you to wear masks and continue social distancing."

In Arizona, there were 2,392 new cases, obliterating the previous record of 1,654 set last Friday. Hospitalizations also hit a new high, at 1,504. Nearly 700 providers in Arizona signed a letter to Governor Doug Ducey saying, “Please issue a state-wide mandate requiring universal masking in public for those 2 years old and above." Ducey has said that COVID-19 is something "we need to learn to live with."

JUNE 17:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 141,872 new COVID-19 cases today, and 5,264 deaths. In the US, there were 26,228 new cases and 809 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 8.39 million cases and 450,452 deaths, with 2.23 million cases and 119,941 deaths in the US.

India13,103
Saudi Arabia4,919
Bangladesh4,008
Iraq1,554

Germany registered 1,122 new cases, its highest total since April 24th. This is due in substantial part to an outbreak at the Toennies slaughterhouse in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, where 657 out of 983 tests came back positive. The slaughterhouse has been ordered closed and the 7,000 or so workers at the plant have been placed in quarantine. In addition, schools and child care centers across the country were shut down until summer vacation starts later this month, due to the overall spike in cases.

The Toennies official in charge of the company's pandemic response said, "We were aware [that foreign workers wanted to see their families as Europe started to reopen, and]... carried out extra testing of people returning from holidays and so on. But we didn't succeed in keeping out these sources or this source - we don't know which exactly."

The head of the company, Clemens Toennis, said, “It’s not about the company now, it’s about the people and the community. We fully support the authorities in all measures.”

Compare and contrast this response to attitudes and statements in the US, where meat packing plants have been declared as "essential" businesses and forced to stay open, and where the state of Nebraska refuses even to disclose COVID-19 rates at meat packing plants.

Yesterday, the President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, announced that he and his wife have both tested positive for COVID-19.

Also yesterday, Chile reported 31,422 cases that had occurred in the past, that is, a massive undercount. Including the 4,757 cases that were added specifically for yesterday, yesterday's total worldwide case count was 146,111, a new record.

In the United States, Florida (3,207) and Arizona (2,519) set new records for cases again. Several Palm Beach County hospitals are now at adult ICU capacity. The US case total is the highest so far in June.

Also in the US, reactions to the virus have shifted along partisan lines. A Wall Street Journal article published today from an interview with Donald Trump reported, "The president ... allowed for the possibility that some Americans wore facial coverings not as a preventative measure but as a way to signal disapproval of him." The President also said, "I personally think testing is overrated, even though I created the greatest testing machine in history." The USA currently ranks 27th per capita worldwide in testing.

When the virus first hit the US, there was a perception in some parts that it was a "blue state" thing. On March 18 -- 3 months ago today -- New York alone account for 45% of all US cases. The vast majority of cases were in "blue states," that is, states with Democratic Governors.

Two months ago today, New York had more than 7000 new cases, Shortly thereafter, Mitch McConnell said he would not support "blue state bailouts."

Let's look at the trends, on the 18th of each month since:

JUNE 19:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 181,005 new COVID-19 cases today, and 5,066 deaths. In the US, there were 33,539 new cases and 719 deaths.

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 8.75 million cases and 461,820 deaths, with 2.30 million cases and 121,407 deaths in the US.

55,209.
That's the number of cases in Brazil today, per worldometers. The prior record for any country on any day was 39,072, in the US on April 24th. Today's number in Brazil exceeds that by 41%. Brazil passed the one million total case mark today, and now sits at 1,038,568 total cases. The overall "positivity rate" in Brazil, that is, the percentage of tests with positive results, is 44%.

33,539.
That's the number of cases in the USA today, per worldometers. That's the largest number in the USA since May 1st, and the 8th highest overall.

New single-day highs were recorded in:
StateNumber of Cases
Texas4,497
Florida3,822
Arizona3,246
Tennessee1,188
South Carolina1,083

It may seem striking that all 5 of those states are "red states," though to be fair, some "blue states" are also having spikes. Nonetheless, 64% of today's cases were in "red states." Without formally checking, I'm pretty sure that's a new record as well.

In Texas in particular, in many areas cases are hitting younger populations. Per Governor Greg Abbott: "There are certain counties where a majority of the people who are tested positive in that county are under the age of 30, and this typically results from people going to bars." If he's exaggerating, it's not by much.

Tomorrow, Donald Trump will hold a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. COVID-19 rates in Tulsa have quadrupled over the past two weeks. In Oklahoma overall, there have been 802 cases the past 2 days; for the Thursday/Friday two weeks ago the number was 198.

The rally tomorrow will be at an indoor arena with close to 20,000 people, in close quarters, not moving around, likely not wearing masks. Thousands more will crowd overflow venues. Many of these people are traveling from areas outside of Tulsa, including from other states.

Preliminary studies of the various civil rights protests around the countries have suggested that the has not (yet) been a spike among protest attendees, those events have typically had the advantages of:
  1. being outdoors
  2. large numbers of attendees wearing masks and taking other precautions during the events
  3. the crowd moving, so attendees have typically not been in prolonged contact with the same people
The Tulsa event will have none of these advantages.
