COVID-19 Compilation: Part 42 - January 10-16, 2021
On March 14th, I began posting COVID-19 updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have used data from worldometer as a primary source for daily and cumulative data, with frequent supplementation from various national and local sites.
Notables this week:
- death counts set new records this week in the USA and worldwide
- cases numbers declined both worldwide and in the USA
- World deaths surpassed 2 million, while USA deaths surpassed 400,000
- China reported its first COVID-19 death in 8 months
This blog post compiles the period of January 10th through 16th, 2021. see https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ for more

There were new USA and world single-day records for deaths today; in the USA there were new records in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia and Mississippi.
In the aftermath of last Wednesday's attack on the US Capitol last week that forced congresspeople to shelter in a crowded space with each other, at least 3 legislators have since tested positive for COVID-19: Brad Scheider (D-Il), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ). All 3 issued scathing statements directed at Republican lawmakers who refused to wear masks while sheltering.

per the worldometer tallies, tomorrow will mark the 2 millionth COVID-19 death worldwide. That number is low, of course. Many countries have reported only small fractions of the actual toll. China, for example, still officially reports 4,634 deaths, the last of which was on May 17th. Russia is officially 63,370, even though Russia admitted in late December that the actual number is at least 3 times that amount.
(note: China reported a COVID-19 death on January 14th).
In the USA, the 7-day rolling average for cases has started to decline for the first time in 2021, after peaking at nearly 255,000 per day on Monday. The 7-day rolling average for deaths hit a new high today, at 3,418.

Per worldometer tallies, the USA will pass 400,000 deaths tomorrow. The following chart shows the amount of time for each 100,000 deaths in the USA, from the first recorded death in late February, 2020.
A Los Angeles County update yesterday said that, per their models, "about 1 in 115 (between 1 in 165 and 1 in 80) Los Angeles County residents are currently infectious to others." The update also said, "Approximately 1 in 3 persons in Los Angeles County has been infected with COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic." More than 13,000 people have died in Los Angeles county from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, including 279 today.

Time for a trip in the way-back machine. Exactly 13 weeks ago, I opened my summary as follows:
Today is the first day with more than 400,000 cases worldwide.
The USA is over 70,000 cases for the first time since July.
13 states had new single day highs today.
Perhaps the most startling is North Dakota, with 864 new cases. The total population of North Dakota is 762,062. That means that one out of every 882 people in North Dakota got a positive test result, today.
How quaint! Here's a bit how things have changed since then:
- The last time the world count for new cases was less than 500,000 was in December.
- The last time the US case count was less than 100,000 was on election day.
- Every state in the Continental United States has set a new single day record in the past 13 weeks.
- 30 states have surpassed having one out of every 882 people getting a positive result on the same day.
The CDC also publishes a tableau visualization of the CDC excess deaths from COVID-19, that allows user interaction to see data by state.

Case numbers showed a decline during a non-holiday week since September. Some of that may be due to catch-up reporting during the prior week -- that is, the numbers for the week ending the 9th may have been inflated due to reporting delays from the prior two weeks.
Deaths continued to rise to new records both in the USA and worldwide, as cases from the fall surge resolve.
The attached graph shows the USA and world weekly cases and deaths.
