On March 14th, 2020, I began posting COVID-19 updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have used data from worldometer as a primary source for daily and cumulative data, with frequent supplementation from various national and local sites.

Notables this week:

  • new cases continued to fall sharply in both the USA and worldwide
  • deaths showed significant declines in both the USA and worldwide
  • significant easing of restrictions began in some portions of the USA

This blog post compiles the period of February 1st through 6th, 2021. see https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ for more

Today's counts

World 103.94 million 395,127 2.248 million 9,371
USA 26.92 million 126,453454,224 1,915

The worldwide case count today was the lowest since October 20th. The 7-day average for cases worldwide hit the lowest level since November 4th. In the USA, the 7-day average for cases fell to the lowest level since November 13th.

Yesterday marked the end of another full calendar month. Overall, cases rose 0.6% worldwide, and fell 3.6% in the United States. There were more cases in the USA than in the next 7 countries, combined. Deaths rose 16.7% worldwide, and 22.2% in the United States.

The attached table shows the cases and deaths in January, along with the monthly rate of change, for the 25 countries with the most reported COVID-19 cases overall.

World 104.40 million 457,688 2.262 million 14,778

On Sunday, Iowa reported 250 COVID-19 deaths, demolishing not only the Iowa record for a single day, but also shattering the single day per capita record for any US state, at 79 per million. Per a report in the Des Moines Register, "some of Iowa’s COVID-19 deaths recorded Sunday dated as far back as October."

The point being, as with many other recent single-state spiked in reported deaths, that the COVID-19 death reporting is still behind, and the official totals are likely significantly less than the reality.

Meanwhile, according to the CDC, there are now more people who have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, than have had cases of COVID-19. The CDC counts are 26.44 million people having received at least one vaccine dose, as compared to 26.16 cases of COVID-19 in the USA (worldometer data shows somewhat higher numbers).

I went to the mall today.

It's not that I craved going to the mall. It's simpler than that: my iMac had a problem, and by far the best way to take care of it remains going in person to The Apple Store.

Michigan has recently eased up lockdown restrictions, and the mall was hopping. The food court was buzzing. There were lines everywhere. The biggest difference in the corridors to what I might have expected a year ago, was that nearly everyone was masked.

Will we see a spike in cases? Not hugely likely.

US cases were down by the largest percentage margin since the beginning of the pandemic this week. Deaths, while still high, also had a noticeable drop.
