COVID-19 Compilation: Part 16 - June 28-July 4, 2020

On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.

This blog post compiles the period of June 28th through July 4th. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

JUNE 28:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
There were 163,172 new COVID-19 cases today, including 40,540 in the USA. Cumulative totals are now 10.24 million worldwide, including 2.64 million in the USA.

There were 3,454 COVID-19 deaths worldwide today, including 285 in the USA. Cumulative totals are now 504,078 worldwide, including 128,437 in the USA.

Typical disclaimers about lower Sunday numbers, in particular lower death numbers on Sundays, apply.

That said, the US still cleared 40,000 new cases for the 4th consecutive day. States with new records:

StateNumber of Cases
Arizona3,857
Georgia2,225

Yesterday, for the first time since the pandemic began, there were more USA deaths in red states than in blue states (for this purpose, I'm using the party affiliation of the governor for "red" and "blue," and counting DC as a blue state).

Nonetheless, the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) as well as the incremental CFR, has been consistently lower in red states since the start of the pandemic, and that has not changed. Today, for example, there were 25,448 new cases and 112 deaths in red states (IFCR of 0.44%), while there were 14,560 new cases and 156 deaths in blue states (IFCR of 1.07%). No doubt, some current deaths in states like New Jersey and New York are resulting from cases that were diagnosed weeks or even months ago. It remains to be seen whether -- or even if -- the CFR and incremental CFR numbers start evening out.

JUNE 29:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
There were 160,985 new COVID-19 cases today, including 44,734 in the USA. Cumulative totals are now 10.40 million worldwide, including 2.68 million in the USA.

There were 3,415 COVID-19 deaths worldwide today, including 346 in the USA. Cumulative totals are now 507,528 worldwide, including 128,783 in the USA.

For the 2nd time since the start of the pandemic, there were more US deaths is so-called "red" states than in "blue" states (color by the party affiliation of the governor of the state). There were more COVID-19 deaths today in Mississippi than in New York and New Jersey combined.

Meanwhile, Arizona became the latest state to re-shut bars, following Texas and parts of California and Florida.

this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
There were 208,864 new COVID-19 cases worldwide today, including 57,236 in the USA. Both numbers are new records. Cumulative totals are now 10.97 million worldwide, including 2.84 million in the USA.

Yesterday, former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain tweeted, about tomorrow's Donald Trump rally at Mt. Rushmore, “Masks will not be mandatory for the event, which will be attended by President Trump. PEOPLE ARE FED UP!”

Cain, who also attended Trump's rally in Tulsa 12 days ago, announced today that he has been admitted to an Atlanta-area hospital with COVID-19.

In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, college students have been throwing parties in which they not only invite people infected with COVID-19, but then gamble on which party guests will come down with the virus next.

In West Nyack, New York, a house party was thrown on June 17th by someone who was already symptomatic with COVID-19. Many of the guests -- estimated at 50-100 people -- then attended other house parties in New City the following weekend. Several people who were exposed have thus far refused to cooperate with contact tracers.

In Lakeway, Texas, a "pong fest" party exposed about 300 teens to COVID-19. It may be worth noting, here, that a "pong" party in February at the Kitzloch Bar in the Austrian ski resort town of Ischgl was considered "ground zero" for much of the early European outbreak of the disease, directly leading to hundreds of cases in Germany, Iceland, the UK, Norway, Denmark, and Ireland as well as in Austria.

The events in Alabama, New York and Texas have become super spreaders, and there are many others.

These acts, as egregiously massively stupid as they are, are not representative of the majority of Americans. But until they stop, their impact will continue to be outsized.

JULY 3:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
There were 209,028 new COVID-19 cases worldwide today, including 54,904 in the USA. The world number is a new record. Cumulative totals are now 11.18 million worldwide, including 2.89 million in the USA.

While the USA did not set a new single day record for cases today, that is likely only because Los Angeles County did not report any data today. Per an announcement: "Public Health will be improving our data processing systems and will not report data beginning on Friday, July 3rd until Monday, July 6th."

There were 5,170 COVID-19 deaths worldwide today, including 616 in the USA. Cumulative totals are now 528,409 worldwide, including 132,101 in the USA.

One of last night's stories is partially false: Although there were parties in Tuscaloosa in which people who knew they had COVID-19 symptoms attended, the gambling portion appears to have been an exaggeration by a local city council member. The actual story was bad enough without that.

In the United States today, 6 states set new single day records for cases:

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Kansas
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • South Carolina

Now that worldometers in showing historical data for all US states and DC, I have put together a table for each state showing its high to date of both cases and deaths, and the associated dates those highs were recorded (in the case of a tie, the most recent date). While some highs were due to reporting glitches, overall this gives a decent glimpse of the trends. Items highlighted in yellow are new highs set today.

Single day highs for US cases and deaths, by state.

JULY 4:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
There were 189,413 new COVID-19 cases worldwide today, including 45,182 in the USA. The world number is a new record. Cumulative totals are now 11.37 million worldwide, including 2.94 million in the USA.

There were 4,489 COVID-19 deaths worldwide today, including 254 in the USA. Cumulative totals are now 532,861 worldwide, including 132,318 in the USA.

USA numbers are lower than the past few days, in part due to less reporting on the July 4th holiday: Minnesota, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Connecticut and Rhode Island all took the day off from reporting, as did San Diego and Los Angeles Counties in California. The 254 deaths reported today are the least since March 23rd.

For the week concluding July 4th, there were 1.31 new cases worldwide, including 339,807 in the USA. Both are new weekly records. The USA total represents a 120% rise over the past 3 weeks.

Also for this past week, there were 31,574 deaths worldwide, including 3611 in the USA. The World number is down about 2% week over week, while the US number is down 13%, some of which is due to the non-reporting by the 6 states and the Southern California counties today.

This week marks the 11th consecutive week of falling death totals in the US; during that time the overall US death rate has fallen by 77%. This has led to a perception in many quarters that the US death rate is falling everywhere, and that perhaps the virus has lost potency.

This perception is flawed.

Thirteen US States saw a rise in deaths this past week. In some cases, the raw numbers are so low as to be inconsequential. But the list also includes several states with large case and death counts. The Texas weekly death number is a new record, and the Florida total is the highest in 8 weeks. See the attached table for more detail.
deaths increased this week in 13 states, including 3 that did not report full data in July 4th.
