COVID-19 Compilation: Part 32 - November 1-7, 2020
On March 14th, I began posting COVID-19 updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have used data from worldometer as a primary source for daily and cumulative data, with frequent supplementation from various national and local sites.
This blog post compiles the period of November 1st through 7th. see https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ for more
NOVEMBER 1
Today's counts | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Location | Total Cases | Cases Today | Total Deaths | Deaths Today |
World | 46.80 million | 436,707 | 1.205 million | 5,300 |
USA | 9.47 million | 71,321 | 236,471 | 399 |
There were more than 12 million new cases globally in October, the 6th consecutive month with a new record. The prior record was 8.5 million new cases. Deaths were also up, though it's not yet clear whether there will be a long-term upward trend in COVID-19 deaths.
The following tables show the states with at least 250,000 new cases and at least 2,500 COVID-19 deaths during October, as well as the percentage change from September on a daily basis. Be prepared for some eye-popping numbers: France, the UK, Italy, Belgium, Poland and Czechia all had more cases in October than in all of the prior months combined.

The country with the largest rise in the death rate isn't shown in these tables: Belgium went from 54 deaths in August, to 107 in September, to 1,451 in October -- a 1,212% increase from September to October, even after nearly doubling the prior month.
It may appear, from these tables, that countries such as Brazil and India have turned the corner on COVID-19. While that is certainly possible, it should also be noted that Brazil's positivity rate in October was still nearly 20%, a sure indicator that Brazil's testing is weak. India's downward trends may also be at least partly due to ineffective detection of the virus.
Compared to several of the European countries in the case table, the USA's rise of 54% in the case rate seems modest. The USA was also down by 1.5% for deaths on a daily basis, but there's a bit of a mirage there: 36 states had increases in the death rate last month. I'll have more on the USA monthly data in the updates over the next two days.

Location | Total Cases | Cases Today | Total Deaths | Deaths Today |
World | 47.31 million | 472,617 | 1.211 million | 5,701 |

Yesterday I went through world numbers for the month of October.
Today, the USA. Cases only.
Cases were up 54% in the USA on a daily bases in October, as compared to November. The total cases for the month, 1.93 million, was just a shade below the 2 million cases recorded in July, but more than 570,000 of those cases came in the final week of the month.
- 47 states had increases in cases in October; just Georgia, Louisiana and Hawaii went down.
- 45 states had increases of at least 10% in cases.
- 42 states had increases of at least 20% in cases.
- 19 states had at least twice as many cases per day in October as in September.

Location | Total Cases | Cases Today | Total Deaths | Deaths Today |
World | 48.41 million | 571,032 | 1.230 million | 9,059 |
USA | 9.12 million | 108,554 | 239,828 | 1,200 |
The worldwide COVID-19 daily death record of 8,530 had stood since April 17th. Today that number fell easily, as 20 different countries recorded at least 100 deaths.
The USA case record was shattered today, with more than 108,000 new cases. Records were set throughout the Big 10 conference states, as Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin all set new case records. In addition, Rhode Island, Washington, Maine and Idaho set new case records, and Wyoming set a new death record.
Over the past two updates, I've gone through world case and death totals for October, and USA case totals for October. Today, a brief look at USA COVID-19 deaths in October.
Overall, there were 24,323 COVID-19 deaths in the USA in October. On a daily basis, that was down 1.5% from September.
However, it would be misleading to go with the broad headline, "USA deaths down last month." The 4 states that had the most deaths in September - Texas, Florida, California and Georgia -- all had substantial drops in COVID-19 deaths in October.
But, deaths went up in 36 other states in October, in some cases by a substantial margin. The most extreme was Wisconsin, which went from 31st most deaths with 205 in September, to 9th highest with 704 in October. The following table shows the death number by state, in October, along with the percentage change from September.

NINETEEN states set new single day case records today.
Three states also set new single day COVID-19 death records today.
North Dakota reported new cases for one out of every 496 in its population state-wide today. The overall case rate of 6.5% of the total North Dakota population is more than any world country of more than 100,000 people. South Dakota's overall case rate of 5.8% also exceeds the highest rate of any world country of more than 100,000 people.
The table below shows the states the set new case records today, along with the per capita totals, as well as the previous records.

---|---|---|---|---|
Location | Total Cases | Cases Today | Total Deaths | Deaths Today |
World | 49.65 million | 623,266 | 1.248 million | 9,082 |
USA | 10.06 million | 132,540 | 242,230 | 1,248 |
Per worldometer, the USA reported cases surpassed 10 million total today; the world total will surpass 50 million tomorrow.
France had a stunning 60,486 cases today, and Italy had 37,409. There were 3,258 COVID-19 deaths in EU countries today, including 828 in France.
On October 25th, I wrote, "Texas will likely surpass one million total cases shortly after election day." At the time, I didn't expect it to be just 3 days after election day. Texas surpassed one million cases today, with its 5th consecutive day of more than 8,000 cases. More troubling, 400 Texans have died over the past 3 days from COVID-19. TWENTY-ONE states set new single day case records today. Thirty states have set new records for daily cases so far in November.
Three states also set new single day COVID-19 death records today.
North Dakota reported new cases for one out of every 432 in its population state-wide today. More than 1% of the entire state has tested positive for COVID-19 in the first 6 days of this month. The overall infection rate in North Dakota of 6.7% now exceeds that of any country of any size anywhere in the world.
The table below shows the states the set new case records today, along with the per capita totals, as well as their previous records.

Weekend numbers are typically lower in the USA; nonetheless, 12 states set new case records today.
France had 86,852 new cases today. On a pro rate basis, that's the equivalent of 441,000 in the United States.
As for the week, it's almost a repeat of last week's recap: This week marks the 6th consecutive week in which the *rate* of growth in USA cases has exceeded that of the prior week. There were more than twice as many cases in the USA this past week than there were just 4 weeks ago.
To the extent there is the appearance of a silver lining, it's that USA deaths, while also going up, are going up at a far slower pace. Nonetheless, when cases go up this fast, deaths inevitably follow, and this week's death count in the USA was already the highest in 10 weeks.
The attached graphs show the weekly USA and world case and death numbers.
