COVID-19 Compilation: Part 33 - November 10-14, 2020
On March 14th, I began posting COVID-19 updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have used data from worldometer as a primary source for daily and cumulative data, with frequent supplementation from various national and local sites.
This blog post compiles the period of November 10th through 14th. see https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ for more

It will take several weeks before we know for sure the efficacy and safety of the vaccine, and likely several months more before it is widely available.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that the United States hit an all-time high in COVID-19 hospitalizations today, with 61,964. The prior record of 59,940 was set back on April 15th. The United States also experienced the most deaths on one day since August 18th.
Nine states set new records for cases today. Illinois and Texas both had more than 12,000 new cases. The least populated US state is Wyoming, with about 578,000 people.
- Worldwide, there are now 12 countries of at least 500,000 people with at least 3% total cases, per capita
- There are now 28 US states with at least 3% total cases, per capita.
- Worldwide, there are 19 countries of at least 500,000 people with at least 500 COVID-19 deaths per million people.
- There are now 27 US states, and also the District of Columbia, with at least 500 COVID-19 deaths per million people.

Last week, I co-chaired a precinct in my town. Two precincts voted in our location, which was the gym of a local middle school. Altogether, about 1,400 people came through the gym doors that day.
According to statistics for the zip code of the precincts and of our county, I should expect that approximately 5 people who were in the gym at on Election Day, have subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.
Add in people who have not been tested because they do not have symptoms, or who have been tested and have not received their results, and also adding in the post-election work at town hall with the chairs and co-chairs of 25 precincts as will as township officials, and it's likely that I was exposed to somewhere between 25 and 50 people during election day who had the COVID-19 virus.
All election workers were required to wear masks, and probably more than 99% of voters also wore masks. As a co-chair, I didn't personally handle items such as voter driver licenses. So I'm not personally worried about picking up COVID-19 from the election work. Still, a bit of a sobering thought, as to the extent of exposure.
18 states had new case records today. More than half of the USA states have set new records since Tuesday. The overall case number for the USA smashed yesterday's record by more than 15,000.
Deaths have not yet caught up, but were still over 1000 for the 3rd straight day. More than 4,100 Americans have died during that time; it is the most in any 3-day period over the past 60 days.
From this, it might be tempting to suggest that the USA is uniquely out of control with respect to virus containment. It is not. At least, not quite.
Three EU countries had more cases per capita than the USA today, and most of the others have had much more at some point in the last few weeks.
Are we heading towards 250,000 or more cases per day in the USA? Likely.
