COVID-19 Compilation: Part 2 - March 22-28, 2020
On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.
This blog post compiles the period of March 22nd through March 28th. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

MARCH 22 (USA):
The numbers have been fluctuating all day, so maybe there's some bad data in here.
Per worldometers, there are 12,345 new cases in New York so far today.
Let's put that in perspective:
In the rest of the US, there are 1,604 new cases (note that Washington, New Jersey, Michigan and Illinois haven't updated yet today, so that number is likely to double).
In the world, there are presently 32,995 new cases.
And 12,345 of them are in New York.
Some of this may be catching up on testing, and, as I noted above, the data has been fluctuating today. Still...
United States Coronavirus: 38,164 Cases and 396 Deaths - Worldometer
MARCH 22 (World):
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Let's start with possible good news in the numbers:
Italy's numbers were wretched, with 5560 new cases and 651 deaths. And we know that Italy is so strapped that not all new cases or deaths are being reported. Still, that's a drop of more than 15% -- almost 1000 cases -- from Saturday, and the death total is down from 793 deaths on Saturday.
New cases in the United States nearly doubled, from 4824 to 9339, making the United States the world leader in new cases. New York dominated the day in the United States, with nearly 5418 new cases. New York also had 58 deaths out of the record 118 for the US.
Worldwide, there were 32,433 new cases and 1634 deaths, both new records.

MARCH 23:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
The question of the day for me is, how reliable is this data, anyway? Yesterday there were 6 major European countries with substantial drops in the number of new cases. Today, 3 of those 6 popped right back, and worse: Spain nearly doubled new cases, and France more than doubled.
The US, meanwhile, is in bad shape: More than 10,000 new cases today, with half of them coming from New York. New Jersey, with more than 900 new cases, is now the 2nd most impacted state. 140 people died in the US from COVID-19 today, binging the total to date to more than 550. It's bad, and it's getting worse in a hurry.
But on to Italy. Italy had another awful day, with 4789 new cases and 601 deaths. But 4789 new cases is less than 5560 cases, and 5560 cases was less than the 6657 the day before. The R0 number in Italy -- the number that signifies how many people an infectious person will infect -- has gone down from 2.6 to 1.1 in the past 9 days. The number of new cases is still well more than the combination of full recoveries and deaths, meaning that already scarce hospital resources are stretched even further. But... if the social distancing policies continue to drive down the R0, we may start to see Italy's numbers come down substantially.
Worldwide, there were 41,331 new cases and 1875 deaths, both new records. One milestone: today also marks the world's 100,000th documented full recovery.

MARCH 24:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
The United States is suddenly over 50,000 total cases. By this time tomorrow, there will be more active cases in the United States than in any other country in the world, including Italy. By the end of the week, there will be more total cases of COVID-19 in the world than any other country, including China. There are now more total cases in New York than in all but 4 other countries. New York also became the first state in the country with more than 100 deaths on a single day.
Worldwide, the total number of cases passed the 400,000 mark today, and for the first time there were more than 2,000 deaths on a single day.
There were also 2 more deaths from the Diamond Princess, 5 weeks after the disembarkation completed. 115 cases from the cruise ship remain active.

MARCH 25:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Spain has now passed China as the country with the 2nd-most deaths due to COVID-19. Per capita, more people are dying now in Spain than in any other large country, including Italy.
The United States, with another 13,355 new cases, now leads the world in active new cases. By this time tomorrow the United States will likely have the most total cases in the world. The official death count was 247 for the day, a new record, bringing the national total up to more than 1,000. There are now more than 32,000 active cases in New York.
Worldwide, there were more than 48,000 new cases. The death count was down slightly, but still nearly 2,400. More than 21,000 people have now died from COVID-19, and more than half of the deaths have been in the past 6 days.

MARCH 26:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
As expected, the United States passed both China and Italy today to become the world leader in total confirmed cases. It is likely that the United States will hit the 100,000 mark for total cases tomorrow.
More deaths were recorded today in Spain than in Italy, despite Italy having one of its worst days to date.
Virtually every country in Western Europe had substantial increases in the number of new cases today.
The most startling increase was in Turkey, where just two weeks ago there were no cases and there were serious claims that Turks were naturally immune to COVID-19. Today, there were nearly 1200 new cases in Turkey, raising the total to more than 3,600.
Worldwide, there were more than 60,000 new cases and nearly 2800 deaths today. There have now been more than half a million official cases. The death count has now passed 24,000.

MARCH 27:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
As expected, the United States became the first country in the world to hit 100,000 total confirmed COVID-19 cases today. The US also had 18,691 total cases and 401 deaths.
Spain passed China in total cases.
Italy suffered 919 deaths, easily a record for the most deaths from a single country on one day.
Turkey had more than 2,000 new cases. Turkey's had less than 10 total cases as recently as March 15th. Over the past two days, they've had 3265, for a new total of 5698.
On the brighter side: Italy's total number of cases today, 5909, was a bit less than it was last Friday. The "R0" number for Italy, which measures the level of infectiousness, now sits at 1.0, the level at which the spread of a virus is typically expected to stabilize. 5909 cases is still more than 3 times the number of cases that were resolved today, but it may signify that the lockdown policies in Italy are finally reaching the point of starting a turnaround there.
Worldwide, we had new daily records with 64,502 total cases and 3273 deaths, and are now close to 600,000 cases overall with more than 27,000 deaths.

MARCH 28:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
On a day when Italy passed the 10,000 fatality mark, and on a day when the United States had more than 500 deaths, on a day when the overall worldwide confirmed cases passed 660,000 with more than 30,000 deaths, there were pockets of brighter spots today.
South Korea became just the 1st country after China of more than 2 million inhabitants in which more than half of the total confirmed cases have now resulted in recoveries.
Italy, despite reaching the grim death milestone, still had fewer new cases than on March 20th. In cases per capita, Italy has now been passed by both Switzerland and Spain. And speaking of Spain, despite more horror show death numbers and a huge number of new cases, the total of new cases was down for the 2nd consecutive day.
Spain, however, illustrates just how much new cases can strain the health care system: To date, there have been more than 40,000 hospitalizations there, or more than 55% of the total confirmed cases. For sure, not everyone with COVID-19 has been tested; the Spanish numbers strongly suggest that the actual number of positives there is well in to the hundreds of thousands.
Worldwide, the total number of cases and the total number of deaths both hit one day records, with 66,766 and 3515, respectively. Both of those numbers were up less than 10% from Friday, but we've learned by now not to put too much importance in single day variances.
