COVID-19 Compilation: Part 8 - May 3-9, 2020
On March 14th, I began posting daily updates to my facebook page, regarding the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a backbone for this, I have used data from worldometers. I had no particular plan at the time, but as things have evolved I have kept going at one post per day, eventually settling on a more or less standard format and one topic per day.
This blog post compiles the period of May 3rd through May 9th. I have corrected some typos, augmented with links to original sources, and used some basic html to improve formatting; otherwise these are presented as-is from the original posts.

MAY 3:
this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 82,260 new COVID-19 cases today, and 3,481 deaths. In the US, there were 27.348 new cases and 1,154 deaths.
Worldwide cumulative totals are now 3.56 million cases and 248,156 deaths, with 1.19 million cases and 68,598 deaths in the US.
A note about US deaths: According to some reports, WHO numbers showed a single-day high for US deaths on Friday. worldometers did not. Per worldometers data, US deaths have now declined for five consecutive days, and today's total of 1154 was the lowest since March 31st. US numbers are typically lower on Sundays due to how and when data is reported (e.g., some states, such as Idaho, do not report cases or death data on Sundays), so today's low number should not be seen as part of a trend.
Connecticut did not report new cases today. Per an announcement: "The Connecticut Department of Public Health is transitioning to a new process to make the daily collection of data more sustainable. To facilitate this shift, the report issued today (Sunday, May 3) only contains data on hospitalizations and fatalities. The next full report will be issued on the afternoon of Monday, May 4, and will contain combined data from both Sunday and Monday."
The worldwide death total was the lowest one day total since March 29th.
Here are the 10 countries with the most new cases today:
Russia becomes the 5th country to register at least 10,000 new cases on a single day, after China, the USA, France and Ecuador. Of the prior 4, only the USA has had more than one day of 10,000; the USA has been at least 20,000 every day since March 29th. The other 3 countries all had single day reporting events to "correct" prior errors.
For Russia, today is the 4th consecutive day of a record number of new cases, and although Russia's curve is not as bad as the USA's was in March, it is exponential and likely vastly underreported.
Among the top 10 countries for most cases today, India, Canada and Saudi Arabia also has single-day records.
On the flip side: for the first time since I started tracking, there are *no* countries entirely in Continental Europe in the top 10 list. Qatar and Kuwait combined for more new cases than France and Germany.
Several European had their lowest totals since March, some since early March. Among them:

this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 79,582 new COVID-19 cases today, and 4,096 deaths. In the US, there were 24,713 new cases and 1,324 deaths.
Worldwide cumulative totals are now 3.64 million cases and 252,240 deaths, with 1.21 million cases and 69,921 deaths in the US.
On January 22nd, Donald Trump said, of COVID-19, “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.”
On March 18th, Vladimir Putin said, of COVID-19, “The situation is on the whole under control. Russia looks much better compared with other countries.”
On March 30th, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said, of COVID-19, "no little flu is going to take me down."
And, on March 17th, it was reported that Boris Johnson had joked about calling the UK’s efforts to produce more ventilators, “Operation Last Gasp.”
The United States, Russia, Brazil and the UK have had the most new cases of COVID-19 in the world every day so far this month, accounting for between 57% and 60% of the new cases worldwide each day (it was 58.3% today).
Russia had 10,581 more new cases today. That's slightly below yesterday's record. Russia becomes the only country besides the United States to record more than 10,000 cases on a single day twice.
Brazil recorded 7,119 new cases, a new record for Brazil.
The UK recorded 3,985 new cases, and will likely overtake Italy for the most deaths in Europe sometime this week.
Elsewhere:
India had a new record high for the 4th consecutive day; ay 3,932 cases topping the previous high by more than 1,000 cases.
Bangladesh also had a new record high for cases, becoming the 38th country with more than 10,000 confirmed cases.
The UAE officially reported its 7th consecutive high day, and Saudi Arabia had its 2nd consecutive record.
On the other side: Iceland, New Zealand and Slovenia all reported no new cases; it was the 2nd consecutive day without any new cases in Slovenia.

this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 81,246 new COVID-19 cases today, and 5,787 deaths. In the US, there were 24,798 new cases and 2,350 deaths.
Worldwide cumulative totals are now 3.72 million cases and 258,027 deaths, with 1.24 million cases and 72,271 deaths in the US.
For the 3rd consecutive day, Russia posted more than 10,000 new cases; Russia now accounts for more than 40% of all cases in Europe.
The US had its 2nd consecutive day with fewer than 25,000 cases for the first time since March 30th. The 2.04% growth of total confirmed cases in the US is the smallest since February 27th.
New York had its fewest new cases since March 18th.
Overall, the US recorded 1.8 million new tests over the past week, or about 0.55% of the population. This is still well below the stated goal of many experts of having at least 1% per week. Massachusetts, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Rhode Island were the only states to perform more than 10,000 tests per 1 Million population.

this past day's COVID-19 stats summary:
Worldwide, there were 95,325 new COVID-19 cases today, and 6,811 deaths. In the US, there were 25,459 new cases and 2,528 deaths.
Worldwide cumulative totals are now 3.82 million cases and 264,837 deaths, with 1.26 million cases and 74,799 deaths in the US.
Today, Brazil posted 11,896 cases and 667 deaths, both shattering previous records, and both highest in the world outside the United States. The situation is no doubt much worse, as Brazil performs very few tests and hasn't reported testing numbers since April 27th. President Jair Bolsonaro's approval rating has dropped to 24%.
Russia posted 10,559 new cases. Today is the first day with 3 countries posting more than 10,000 new cases.
The UK posted 6,111 new cases; its 3rd highest total. The UK also became the first European country to pass 30,000 deaths.
Several countries have yet to report any deaths from COVID-19. Six of those countries have more than 25 million population. In order:
North Korea reports no COVID-19 data at all.
Vietnam had a hand-washing commercial go viral. Back in early April, Donald Trump criticized Captain Brett Crozier of the USS Theodore Roosevelt for making a post of call in Vietnam. Officially, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, with about 4,000 crew members, has now had 1,155 cases and one death. Vietnam has had 271 cases and no deaths.
Two countries of more than 1 million population claim to have had no COVID-19 cases at all:
Turkmenistan allegedly banned use of the word "coronavirus."

Worldwide cumulative totals are now 3.91 million cases and 270,426 deaths, with 1.29 million cases and 76,928 deaths in the US.
The situation in Russia appears to be out of hand. There were 11,231 new cases there today, another record. Russia now has the 5th most cases in the world, after passing both France and Germany today.
Yet officially, Russia's "Case Fatality Rate" is just 0.92% -- 1,625 deaths out of 177,160 confirmed cases. That's among the lowest rates in the world, and it "appears" to be dropping; it was 1.02% at the start of the month.
If that story seems vaguely familiar, that may be because some people used the same logic in the US not too long ago, when the official US "Case Fatality Rate" had dropped down to 1.3%.
As noted previously, that rate is ultimately a function of many things, including time. The US CFR now sits at 6.0%.

The number of worldwide cases was the 2nd highest to date, and the highest since April 24th. There have been more than 95,000 cases each of the past 3 days, the first time of 3 consecutive days with that many cases. The 3-day total of 288,714 new cases is easily a new record.
On the plus side, the Faeroe Islands, population 48,863. The Faeroe Islands had a substantial outbreak of COVID-19 mid-March. As of March 17th, the Faeroe Islands had a per capita case rate that was 50 times that of the United States. Even now, with no new cases since April 23rd, the Faeroe Islands is 13th in the world per capita in COVID-19 cases, higher than Italy, the UK or France (the US passed the Faeroe Islands 3 days ago).
Today, the last of the cases in the Faeroe Islands was marked as "recovered." This makes the Faeroe Islands -- at least for the moment -- the country with the most cases, in which there are no active cases and no deaths from COVID-19. There were 187 cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Faeroe Islands overall. Perhaps coincidentally, the Faeroe Islands also has the highest testing rate in the world, having performed 8,403 tests for a rate of 171,971 tests per one million population.
Here in the United States, in the past two days staffers for both the United States President and the United States Vice President have tested positive for COVID-19. The Vice President's press secretary was photographed giving a press briefing yesterday; today she tested positive.
